When my twins reached their toddler years, I realised I couldn't 'fix tantrums'. I tried the methods that old-school parenting books suggested, like counting to three or ten (and then what?!), distraction and even time-outs. None of them helped, and sometimes I would end up having a tantrum along with my kids. UGH!
It was only when I combined mindfulness practice and conscious communication techniques and applied them to parenting that I saw a transformation in how I handled my children's big feelings AND the way they responded.
Not only could I get to the 'soothe' phase faster, but I was more calm, confident and able to role model the emotional literacy and self-regulation skills I wanted my children to have. These techniques have been life-changing for me and my kids. I hope they help you too.
